Profile
The International Center for Climate and Environmental Science (ICCES) of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) was established in 1991, focusing on the research of global climate and environmental change. In 1994, ICCES became the only "Center of Excellence" representing China in the "Commission for Sustainable Development of Southern Science and Technology (COMSATS)", an intergovernmental international scientific and technological organization. ICCES has successively undertaken research in the fields of the climate system model, earth system dynamics model, climate and environmental disaster prediction, natural cybernetics theory, and its application of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics.
ICCES has long been engaged in research in the fields of earth system model development, climate and environmental disaster prediction, natural cybernetics theory, and its application. "Theoretical Framework and Preliminary Design of Earth System Dynamics Model", "Uncertainty Problems in Climate Model Simulation and Prediction" of the Carbon Project of CAS, "Development and Improvement of Ecological and Environmental Process Models under the Global Change 973 Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China" ” and “Development and Evaluation of High-Resolution Climate System Models”, the lead unit and research subject, lead the organization and development of the Earth System Model of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and carry out applied research in the field of meteorological and environmental disasters.
As one of the important scientific research and innovation units of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, ICCES takes "climate" and "ecology and environment" changes as its research goals, and focuses on the basic theory of Earth system dynamics, development and application of Earth system dynamics models, and natural cybernetics. The theory and its application in the control of meteorological and environmental disasters are its discipline orientation, and an open scientific research platform of "Earth System Dynamics Model" can be jointly participated and enjoyed by Chinese Earth system scientists. The future climate, ecology and environmental changes; and cooperate with the observation and research platforms associated with our institute and my country to support the complex system of earth system research in our institute and my country; it aims to improve my country's international status in earth system science. It provides a scientific basis for the sustainable development of my country's economy and society, the rational use of land resources, the protection, improvement and regulation of climate, ecology and environment, as well as for diplomatic negotiations and decision-making in response to global climate, ecological and environmental changes.
In addition, the “Earth System Numerical Simulation Device”, a major national science and technology infrastructure in the 12th Five-Year Plan, was officially established in February 2017, and ICCES is the main support department for the preliminary application and pre-research of this large scientific device. The core goal of this large scientific engineering facility is to develop a numerical simulation software platform for the Global Earth System Model, which includes a complete Earth System Model coupled with the physical climate system, the ecological environment and biogeochemical processes, and will also expand to include space weather, solid Process modules such as Earth and continental ice sheets. ICCES plays an important role in the construction of the above-mentioned national scientific research and innovation system.
ICCES has formed a high-level research team combining the old, the middle-aged, and the young in model research and development, data assimilation, and prediction application. The team is mainly composed of academic leaders and young scientific research backbones in the above-mentioned fields. The laboratory currently has 53 staff, including 15 researchers, 1 senior engineer at the research level, 13 associate researchers, 2 senior engineers, 7 research assistants, 7 postdoctoral fellows, and 6 support teams. In addition, the laboratory has a mobile graduate team of nearly 50 people.
