Delegation of ICCES visited Hydro-Informatics Institute, Thailand

Date:2023-09-06
On September 5, 2023, at the invitation of Dr. Sutat Weesakul, former Director and General Counsel of Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII), Thailand, Prof. Zhaohui LIN, Director of ICCES and a delegation of 6 people visited HII and visited its Automated Telemetry Station and High-performance Computing Center. Dr. Sornthep Vannarat, Director of Policy Research and Development, Institute of Hydrologic Information of Thailand, Dr. Piyamarn Sisomphon, Director of Innovation Department of Hydrologic Information, Ms. Pensiri Saranrat, Director of Strategic Policy Department, and researchers from various departments of HII participated in the meeting.
Dr. Sutat Weesakul extended a warm welcome to the Chinese delegation. He said two parties have a long history of cooperation, and have achieved a series of achievements in scientific research and personnel training. The purpose of this discussion is to discuss future joint research plans in high-performance computing, climate prediction, hydrology and water resources utilization.
After introduction session, 3 researchers from HII firstly reported on Short-term weather forecast to seasonal climate prediction; Climate change and impact assessment; Hydrological models and applications. Dr. Chenglai WU, Associate Professor introduced the Earth System Numerical Simulation Device (hereinafter referred to as "Earthlab") of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and its application. Earthlab is a special Earth system numerical simulation device that deeply integrates hardware and software, integrates "model, data and calculation", and has multiple coupling layers and complete functions. The overall scale and comprehensive technical level have reached the international advanced level. At present, Earthlab has become an important basic research platform for atmospheric, Marine, environmental and computational science research, providing important scientific and technological support for addressing climate change and implementing UNSDGs. The researchers of HII showed great interest in the device, actively asked questions and participated in the discussion. Prof. LIN pointed out that Earthlab is equipped with high-performance computing facilities for earth and environmental science, and the two sides can rely on the device to carry out research on the characteristics, mechanism and prediction of extreme weather and climate disasters in Thailand and neighboring countries and regions. Prof. LIN also mentioned that ICCES would like to invite scholars from developing countries to participate in the development of CAS-ESM and its application in the response to climate change in developing countries in the future, hoping that the China-Thailand team can strengthen exchanges and cooperation and expand the research network.
Final, the two sides discussed cooperation research in the fields of S2S forecasting, high performance computing, talent training, etc. In addition, the two sides also discussed cooperation plans such as short-term visits of scholars, joint training courses or conferences.
