January 18th 2022, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang held a symposium with 35 foreign expert representatives in China before the Spring Festival at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Victor Nnamdi Dike from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics attended the symposium on be half of foreign experts of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In the symposium, Premier Li Keqiang firstly extended festive greetings and good wishes to foreign experts in China and all those international friends who support China's modernization construction, hoped that foreign experts who are working in China would offer more suggestions to the Chinese government. Premier Li Keqiang stressed that China is willing to learn from advanced technology and management experience from the world, continue to carry out extensive international cooperation with other countries, and maintain world peace, stability, development, and prosperity. The Chinese government welcomes more foreign experts to work in China and will further improve the visa and work permit policies for professionals staying in China. The government will also improve and implement policies on taxation, foreign exchange, social security, medical care, and children's schooling to ensure that foreign talents can work in China at ease.
Dr. Victor Dike comes from Nigeria. His major is meteorology, working on the law, mechanism and future prediction of extreme events. He was supported by "Research Fund for International Young Scientists " of the National Natural Science Found of China and the Special Fund for Foreign Experts of the Ministry of Science and Technology. As a young scientist in the field of climate change research, Victor is an active member of the Council of the International Youth Academic Research Network under the World Climate Research Program. He was regional director of the network for Africa and contributed to the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Victor has made important contributions to the construction of the African Climate Change research network, which has been recognized by international organizations such as the World Meteorological Organization and the World Climate Research Program. In 2018, he published an article titled "Obstacles facing Young Climate scientists in Africa" as the first author in Nature Climate Change.
2018, Victor received his PhD in meteorology in the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under Prof. Zhaohui LIN’s supervision. He’s PhD study was supported by CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI). He continued his postdoctoral research at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, and participated in many research projects such as Strategic Pilot Project of Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Key R&D Program of China. As a representative of young scientists supported by PIFI, Victor was interviewed by Nature in 2022 about his endeavor in China. Now, Victor actively participates in the research and internatioanl collaboration activities of CAS-TWAS center of excellence, contributing to help climate-vulnerable developing countries better cope with the impacts of climate change, he believes international cooperation will be crucial to help vulnerable countries tackle climate change and for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
