CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Climate and Environment sciences is conducting research on extreme weather in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Date:2021-11-18
CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Climate and Environment sciences participated in the Overseas Science and Education Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences construction, and undertook the task of "Meteorological Disaster Prediction and Early Warning" of the China-Pakistan Center. Prof. Zhaohui Lin is the principle investigator, Dr. He Zhang and Dr. Chenglai Wu are participants. The task is to carry out research on the regular mechanism and prediction of meteorological disasters such as heavy rain, drought and sandstorm for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as well as the urgent scientific problems related to climate change, and finally to build a weather and climate disaster prediction system which is suitable for CPEC.
On July 22, 2021, the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) held a seminar in Chengdu with the theme "Sustainable Development of Earth Science in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – Natural Disasters and Risks". Prof. Zhaohui Lin and Dr. Chenglai Wu were invited to attend. The seminar emphasized the scientific and technological challenges CPEC tackles, including the prevention and control of threats such as earthquakes, mountain disasters, meteorological disasters, marine disasters, desertification, etc., and reviewed the relevant work and achievements in recent years. Prof. Zhaohui Lin gave a keynote speech on "Characteristics and mechanisms of typical meteorological disasters in China -Pakistan and their predictions" and "Variation of climate extremes and its future projection over Pakistan”, he explained the reasons for extreme weather in Pakistan and the evaluation of CMIP6 on climate forecast data in Pakistan.
